About Log Home Staining

Proper staining protects your logs from UV, moisture, and decay. We prepare surfaces thoroughly and use proven stain systems for a finish that lasts.

Why Proper Staining Matters

Stain is your log home's primary defense against UV damage, moisture, and decay. But stain is only as good as the prep work underneath it. Applying new stain over a dirty or failing surface is a waste of money — it won't bond, it won't last, and it can actually trap moisture against the wood. We do it right: clean surface, proper prep, compatible products, correct application.

Our Staining Process

We start by evaluating the existing coating. If it's compatible and in decent shape, we may be able to clean, brighten, and recoat. If it's failing, we strip it back to bare wood using media blasting or chemical strippers. We then brighten the wood, let it dry to proper moisture content, and apply stain in the right conditions. We use professional-grade products from manufacturers like Sashco, Perma-Chink, Sikkens, and others — chosen based on your specific logs, exposure, and climate.

Stain System Selection

Not all stains are equal, and not all stains work in all situations. Oil-based, water-based, film-forming, penetrating — each has trade-offs. We help you choose the right system based on your log species, profile, sun exposure, and maintenance preferences. We won't push a product that doesn't make sense for your home.

Maintenance Coats vs. Full Restain

If your home was stained properly and maintained on schedule, you may only need a maintenance coat — a lighter application that refreshes UV protection without a full strip and restain. This saves time and money. We'll tell you honestly which approach your home needs.

Log Home Staining — Frequently Asked Questions

How long does log home stain last?
Depending on the product, exposure, and maintenance, a quality stain job can last 3–7 years on the south and west walls, and longer on protected sides. Maintenance coats extend the life significantly.
What stain brands do you use?
We work with Sashco, Perma-Chink, Sikkens, Outlast, and other professional-grade products. We select based on your situation, not brand loyalty.
Can you match my existing stain color?
In most cases, yes. We can match or closely approximate your current color. If you're open to a change, we can provide samples on your actual logs so you see exactly what it will look like.
